Support for Healthcare Staff During Unrest

Following recent unrest across the UK, and concerns raised by Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, regarding racism in the NHS, we at A24Group recognise the additional stress our agency workers may be facing.

Here is guidance and support

NHS England and the A24Group are reaching out to all bank and agency staff working within the NHS Workforce Alliance framework agreements, and beyond.

Together, we are supporting nursing and care staff fearful of racist attacks and are providing practical advice and resources.

We understand that these situations can be stressful, and your safety and wellbeing are paramount.

Your Right to Refuse Treatment

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has updated its guidance on withdrawing care, following comments from the Health Secretary. You can refuse or withdraw care if you face:

Important Steps Before Refusing Treatment

  • Discuss concerns with your manager verbally and in writing.

  • Follow workplace protocols and policies related to safety and safeguarding.

  • Consider relevant professional codes and duty of care.

  • Complete a risk assessment.

  • Consult with the patient and their family (if appropriate).

  • Document your decision clearly, including justifications.

Possible Sanctions for Unjustified Refusal

Not following proper procedures for refusing care can lead to:

  • Disciplinary action, including dismissal.

  • Potential legal action from the patient.

  • Action from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Your Rights as an Employee

The Employment Rights Act 1996 protects you from being penalised for leaving or refusing to work in situations of serious danger.
